Concern over lack of security at cemetery

Labour councillors in Harwich West Ward have reacted to residents’ concerns over a failure to secure the gates to Dovercourt cemetery outside of opening hours.

The gates to the cemetery which control vehicular access are being left wide open at all times in spite of the published position on TDC’s web site which states:
‘In Clacton on Sea and Dovecourt cemeteries vehicular access will be permitted Monday to Friday inclusive between 7.30AM and 4PM.
At weekends and Bank Holidays vehicular access at Clacton on Sea and Dovercourt cemeteries will be permitted between the hours of 10AM and 4.30PM.

West Ward TDC councillor, John Hawkins, says, “The West Ward team have all been hearing concerns from our residents about this.
I imagine its’ because they are more likely to pass the gates than those living in other wards. People are uncomfortable at the thought of cars having access to the cemetery at night and we share their concern.
I have reported the matter to TDC.”
