Press release – Local Labour seek residents’ support for our local library

Members of Harwich Branch Labour Party will be taking to the streets of Dovercourt Town Centre on Friday morning to encourage local residents to oppose any reduction in opening hours or available services at Dovercourt library.

The Conservatives running Essex County Council are proposing cuts to local library services and these have been fiercely opposed by local Labour councillors.

Following the submission of a written response by Harwich Town Council opposing the cuts proposed by Essex County Council, local Labour members will be campaigning on Friday morning to encourage local residents to take part in the ECC public consultation and to oppose any reductions at Dovercourt library. Cllr Garry Calver, who led the opposition to the cuts at the meeting of Harwich Town Council, says, “There can be no justification for cutting hours or services at our local library which is a vital community hub staffed by dedicated and experienced librarians and library workers. We now need local residents to play their part by making their feelings clear in the public consultation.”

Harwich Branch Labour Party has paid to have slips printed that show how to take part in the consultation and local Labour Party councillors and members will be in Dovercourt Town Centre on Friday morning handing then out and encouraging residents to take part in the public consultation.

Cllr Charlie Powell, chair of Harwich Branch Labour Party, says, “It really is time that the Conservatives realised that the Harwich Peninsula needs investment and not more cuts. We are working hard to oppose any cuts at our local library and I am sure we will have the support of local residents.”
