News from Local Labour – Press Release – Labour receives confirmation of lights switch on at Christmas

The Labour Group on Essex County Council has obtained confirmation that all of the street lights in the county will remain switched on throughout the early hours of Christmas Day morning and New Year’s Day morning.

Labour had been concerned that the failure by Essex County Council to agree to this was having a big impact on those organising Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve events and also those seeking to attend them.

Leader of the Labour Group, Cllr Julie Young, says, “Throughout the county people were complaining that they were not going to go out on Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve unless they knew they could get home safely afterwards.  These are occasions when a lot of people choose to walk and well lit streets are even more important than usual.”

Harwich County Councillor, Ivan Henderson, had repeatedly asked for the county’s streets to remain lit on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve and was becoming increasingly angry at the length of time it was taking for a decision to be reached.

Cllr Ivan Henderson says, “It has taken far too long to reach a decision that was obvious and it was having a big impact on those arranging events over the festive season.  It’s good news that people can finally make their plans knowing that they can get home along well lit streets but we should not have had to press so hard to get this decision.”
