Labour seeks TDC backing for lights switch on

Street lightThe Labour Group on Tendring District Council has tabled a motion for the next meeting calling for the part night street lighting scheme to be scrapped.

The motion, tabled in the name of the Labour Group’s leader, Cllr Ivan Henderson, reads:

‘This council informs Essex County Council that it was wrong to impose part night street lighting on the residents of the Tendring District without having first carried out a full public consultation and full risk assessment. It now calls upon ECC to abandon the failed scheme and restore full night street lighting as, since part night street lighting has been introduced, criminal activity has been made easier, the fear of crime has increased, accidents due to poor visibility have increased and the ability of the Emergency services to function effectively has been seriously reduced.’

The motion will be on the agenda for the meeting of the council on Tuesday, 1st July.

Ivan Henderson says, “There is a clear sense of frustration among TDC councillors that the Tories at County Hall are not listening. It is obvious to everyone that part night street lighting has been a shambles but they won’t admit they’ve got it badly wrong. This motion will send a clear message on behalf of the residents of Tendring – It’s time to swallow your pride and switch the lights back on!”
