Labour Delight at CAROS Victory

The Labour Group of TDC councillors are celebrating at the news that the Conservatives running TDC have done a complete U turn and agreed to continue with the council’s CAROS (Community Asset Rent Offsetting Scheme) initiative.

The scheme, which assists a large number of community based clubs, societies and organisations operating out of council owned premises, was a Labour initiative and was to be axed by the present Conservative administration.  Labour fought tooth and nail to prevent this from happening and is delighted that the TDC cabinet has finally agreed to retain the scheme.

Leader of the Labour Group on TDC, Ivan Henderson, says “CAROS was the brainchild of our late Labour colleague, Les Double, and held down the financial overheads of many community based clubs, societies and organisations who do so much good locally.  The Conservatives were determined to axe the scheme and we have had to fight them all the way to retain it.  This is great news!”

Labour councillors have opposed the axing of CAROS in committee, throughout a review of the scheme and in every election fought since the Conservatives announced their intention to axe it.

“It’s been a bruising and bitter struggle but we have finally seen the Conservatives see sense and retain this important initiative,” continued Ivan Henderson.  “The axing of CAROS threatened the very existence of many community based groups and this is great news for their hard working volunteers and the local people they assist.”
