Harwich Labour seeks action on town centre drinking

Labour East Central Ward councillor, Garry Calver, is seeking action to end the problem of day time drinking in Dovercourt town centre.  He contacted Harwich Police after receiving complaints about drunks spending all day on the benches in Dovercourt town centre drinking heavily.Street Drinking

“This is not what people want to see when they are out shopping and many are crossing the road rather than pass close to the drinkers,” he said.  “A dispersal order was put in place a number of years ago covering the town centre box between Orwell Road and Cliff Road.  I have asked the police to enforce this and move the drinkers on and they have agreed to do so.”

Since the story was published in the Standard Garry has been contacted by many residents agreeing with his action and it has also received support from High Street traders.

“I am getting the impression that everyone has been thinking the same thing but have not wished to speak out,” he continued.  “We are working very hard to improve the image and quality of Dovercourt town centre and it is important that this problem is nipped in the bud.”
