World War 1 centenary discussed

2014 is the centenary of the outbreak of World War 1 and Harwich Town Council has discussed its role in commemorating the anniversary.  A working party has been set up to consider how best to proceed and its membership includes Cllrs Charlie Powell, Maria Fowler, Malcolm Nicholson and Garry Calver from the Labour Group.

An initial suggestion from Labour is to hold a civic church service on Sunday 3rd August, the day that the invasion of Belgium occurred prompting the declaration of war by Britain the following day.

Government funding is available for commemoration activities and the working party will be looking into whether such funding may be obtained to clean Harwich and Dovercourt’s war memorials prior to the anniversary.
