Councillor Les Double has announced his intention to stand down as leader of the Labour group on Tendring District Council after twelve years in the post.  He announced his intention to the other members of the group at a meeting last week and will cease to be the group leader from the annual meeting of Tendring District Council on Tuesday 8th May.

Les Double says

“I intend to remain active within the group and as a ward councillor but 12 years is a long time and I feel it would be nice for someone else to take over the reins.  I will, of course, offer every assistance and support to the new group leader and my fellow Labour councillors.”

The Labour group expressed its gratitude for everything that Les has done for Labour and for the Tendring District, not only during his 12 years as the group leader but also over his 17 years as a TDC councillor for Harwich West Ward.  The group was very relieved to have Les’ confirmation that he wishes to remain as an active Labour councillor but simply feels it is the right time for someone else to assume the responsibility of leading the Labour group on TDC.  The Labour group elected Ivan Henderson as the new leader of the Labour group with Garry Calver taking up the post of Deputy leader.

Ivan Henderson says

“Les has been a strong voice for the Labour group and for the residents of the Tendring District throughout his time as leader of the Labour group and his advice and experience will be invaluable as Labour seeks to hold the present Tory administration to account for its actions.  We are very grateful for everything that Les has done over the years and very thankful for all that he will do in the future.”
