Colchester: Labour picks twenty-something to fight in next general election

THE Labour party has announced its provisional choice to fight the next general election in Colchester.

Jordan Newell will battle to become the town’s member of parliament against candidates including current MP Lib Dem Bob Russell and Conservative Will Quince. Like 25-year-old opponent Mr Quince, Mr Newell is still in the early stages of his career, aged just 24. “Regardless of party preference, having young people in politics can only be a good thing,” he said. “I am very pleased that the Labour party is supporting me as their prospective parliamentary candidate.”

Mr Newell, who grew up in Harwich, attended Mayflower Primary School and Manningtree High School. He studied politics at Colchester Sixth Form College before spending five years working with former Clacton MP Ivan Henderson as a parliamentary assistant. Now living in Tufnell Way, Colchester, he works for Volunteering England in London and is currently the youth officer for the Colchester Labour Party.

While Mr Newell’s selection as prospective parliamentary candidate will not be official until the first week of December, he has already had the backing of Gordon Brown.

The prime minister said:

“In Jordan Newell, Colchester has a strong, determined and effective candidate who will put local needs first. “He lives in Colchester, believes in Colchester and will give all of his efforts for Colchester.
“His commitment to his town is exactly what the people of Colchester need from their MP.”

He has now made it to the Council cabinet and seems to pushed some changes in policies such as the 9am start on buses for OAPs.
