Labour was celebrating in Harwich last night as Fiona Powell won the West Ward by-election for Harwich Town Council.

The by-election resulted from the resignation of a Conservative councillor after only 5 months in office and was a straight contest between Labour and UKIP, the Conservatives failing to put forward a candidate to contest the by-election.

Leader of the Labour group on Harwich Town Council, Ivan Henderson, says, “It was clear on the doorsteps that when it comes to local issues residents see Labour as the party putting Harwich and Dovercourt first. Labour is the only party that still believes it is important that residents have the opportunity to meet their candidate and people really seemed to appreciate it when Fiona and the team knocked on their door.”

Fiona Powell gained 56% of the vote and the entire Labour Campaign team was present to witness her election to Harwich Town Council by 438 votes to 350..

Fiona Powell says, “It was wonderful to have the support of such an effective and committed team and I think this reflected the energy and commitment that Labour brings to serving Harwich and Dovercourt. People were incredibly supportive when I met them and I am delighted to join the Labour team that is working so hard for Harwich and Dovercourt.”
